Kookaroo Poker Rules

Kookaroo Poker is a lively, wild-card five-card draw game from the home-game tradition. The twist: after the draw, your single lowest card becomes a wild card — your kookaroo — free to become any rank and suit that makes your hand strongest. Because every player has their own personal wild, hands run big, five of a kind is on the table, and showdowns are full of surprises.

A quick caveat on rules

Kookaroo Poker is not a standardized casino variant — it belongs to the world of wild-card home games, where names and rules drift from one kitchen table to the next. The ruleset here is SPN’s house version, picked for being simple and self-consistent. If you play it elsewhere, expect differences in which card is wild and how ties are handled, and settle those before the first ante.

The objective

Make the best five-card poker hand, with the help of your personal wild card. The hand rankings are the standard ones — but because your lowest card is wild, you should read your holding through that wild, and remember your opponents each have one too.

How a hand plays out

Ante and deal

Each player antes and is dealt five cards face down. A first betting round follows, played on your cards as dealt — the kookaroo is not revealed yet, so you are reading toward it.

The draw

On the single draw, discard from zero to five cards for replacements, then a second betting round is played. Deciding what to keep is the heart of the game: a low card you might normally toss is valuable, because the lowest card you finish with is your wild.

The kookaroo is revealed

At showdown, each player’s single lowest-ranked card becomes wild and is used to complete the strongest possible five-card hand. Aces are high for this purpose, so an ace is never your kookaroo unless it is your only rank.

Hand ranking with a wild card

Five of a kind (best)

Only possible with a wild card, five of a kind — four natural cards of one rank plus your kookaroo — is the top hand in Kookaroo Poker and beats a straight flush.

Then standard rankings

Below five of a kind, the usual order applies: straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, high card. Your wild simply fills whichever card makes the best of these.

Tie-breaking is standard, but note a quirk of wild-card games: two identical hands can occur, such as two players each holding five aces. When that happens the pot is split, exactly as with any tie.

Popular variants

Fixed Kookaroo

Instead of “your lowest card,” a named rank is wild for everyone — deuces are the classic choice. This removes the personal-wild guessing game and plays like a conventional wild-card draw, but with less swing.

Community Kookaroo

After the draw, the dealer turns one card face up in the middle; its rank is wild for every player’s hand. A single shared wild rank makes reads much easier and pulls the game closer to standard draw poker.

Roll-Your-Own Kookaroo

A stud-flavored take: cards are dealt one at a time and each player rolls (turns face up) a card of their choice as they go, with your lowest exposed card wild. It adds visible information and a bluffing layer to the wild-card mechanic.

A worked example

At showdown, Priya shows K♠ K♦ K♣ 8♥ 4♣. Her lowest card is the 4♣, so that is her kookaroo.

The wild 4♣ becomes a fourth king, giving Priya four of a kind — kings — with the 8 as her kicker.

Omar shows 9♥ 9♠ 9♦ 9♣ 2♦. His lowest card, the 2♦, is wild and becomes a fifth nine.

Omar’s five of a kind is the best hand in the game and beats Priya’s four of a kind, so Omar wins the pot.

On SPN

Where SPN offers Kookaroo Poker, the software identifies each player’s wild card automatically and evaluates every hand at its best value, five of a kind included. The table rules panel states which variant is in play — personal, fixed, or community wild — so there is no ambiguity at showdown. Dealing is provably fair and tables are bot-free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the “kookaroo” in Kookaroo Poker?

The kookaroo is your wild card. In the standard house version, after the draw the single lowest-ranked card in your own hand plays as a wild card — it can stand in for any rank and suit to complete your best hand. Everyone has their own kookaroo, so wild cards are personal, not shared.

Is Kookaroo Poker a real, standardized variant?

Not in the way Hold’em or Omaha are. It is a home-game, wild-card draw game in the same family as “Low Hole Wild” and other kitchen-table specials, and the exact rules — even the spelling — differ from group to group. The version described here is SPN’s house ruleset, chosen because it is simple and self-consistent.

Can two players use the same card as wild?

No. Each player’s kookaroo is decided only by their own hand, so two players can absolutely have wilds of different ranks at the same showdown. This is what makes the game swingy: you never know exactly how strong an opponent’s hand really plays until cards are shown.

Can I make five of a kind?

Yes. Because your lowest card is wild, five of a kind is possible and it is the best hand in Kookaroo Poker, beating a straight flush. When wild cards are in play, five of a kind sits above every natural hand in the ranking.

What happens if my lowest cards are tied?

Only one card is wild. If your two lowest cards share the same rank, the house rule makes exactly one of them wild (your choice of suit) and the other plays as a natural card of that rank — which often pairs neatly into trips or a full house. Agree this edge case before you play, since some groups make both wild.
