Baseball Rules

Baseball is a beloved wild-card Seven-Card Stud variant built entirely around its namesake sport: 3s and 9s are wild for three strikes and nine innings, a face-up 4 earns you a "walk" to an extra card, and a face-up 3 can cost you a buy-in to stay in the game. With up to eight wild cards live, hands run huge and five of a kind is routine.

A quick caveat on rules

Baseball is a dealer-choice home game, not a standardized casino variant, so the extra rules vary widely from table to table — whether the face-up 3 "buy the pot" penalty is used, whether a face-up 4 grants an extra card, and whether the pot plays high-only or high-low. The rules below describe the most common version. Always confirm the house rules before the first deal.

The objective

Make the best five-card poker hand, just as in Seven-Card Stud — but with 3s and 9s wild. Because wild cards are everywhere, ordinary hands are almost worthless: you will usually need four of a kind or five of a kind to win, so knowing how high the bar sits is half the battle.

How a hand plays out

Dealt like Seven-Card Stud

The deal follows Seven-Card Stud: two down and one up to begin, three more up cards, and a final down card, with a betting round on each street. The baseball rules are layered on top of that familiar structure.

Threes and nines are wild

Every 3 and every 9 is wild and can stand for any card. With eight wild cards in the deck, most hands finish very strong — four of a kind is common and five of a kind, which beats a straight flush, is frequently the winner.

The 4-card and 3-card twists

A 4 dealt face up is a walk: the player is immediately dealt an extra card. Under the common house rule, a 3 dealt face up forces the player to match the pot to keep the hand — and that valuable wild card — or fold. Both rules are optional and differ by table.

Popular variants

With or without the face-up 3 buy

The most debated rule is the face-up 3 penalty. Stricter tables make a player match the whole pot to keep a wild 3, which can balloon the pot quickly. Gentler tables drop the rule entirely, so a face-up 3 is simply a free wild card.

With or without the extra card on a 4

Many tables give an extra card for a face-up 4, and some allow it for every 4 that lands face up. Others skip the rule so the deal stays even. Whether the bonus card is dealt face up or face down is itself a house choice.

High-only vs. Hi-Lo

Baseball is usually played for high only, where the wild cards push everyone toward monster hands. A Hi-Lo split version exists, but wild cards make qualifying lows unusual, so most groups keep it high-only. Related themed games such as Night Baseball deal every card face down.

A worked example

Marcus holds K♠ K♦ in the hole and is showing 9♥ 3♣ Q♠ on his up-cards. His 9 and 3 are both wild, so they stand in as two more kings.

That gives Marcus four kings already — two natural and two wild — and he still has cards to come, putting five of a kind within reach.

Meanwhile Priya is dealt a 4 face up and takes her extra card under the house rule, giving her one more chance to complete her own five of a kind. In Baseball, that kind of arms race for the biggest hand is the norm, not the exception.

Tips for the home game

Recalibrate your hand values: with 3s and 9s wild, a full house is often a losing hand, so aim for four of a kind or better before you commit real chips. Keep an eye on how many 3s and 9s are already showing around the table — the fewer left live, the less likely anyone is sitting on a monster. If your table uses the face-up 3 buy rule, factor its cost in before you celebrate a wild card. And as always with a dealer-choice game, settle which optional rules are in play before the deal so nobody is surprised when a 3 or a 4 hits the board.

Frequently asked questions

What is Baseball in poker?

Baseball is a Seven-Card Stud variant themed on baseball. Under standard house rules, 3s and 9s are wild (three strikes, nine innings), a 4 dealt face up earns the player an extra card, and a 3 dealt face up often forces a player to match the pot to stay in or fold.

Which cards are wild in Baseball?

Threes and nines. The theme is that three strikes make an out and there are nine innings in a game, so 3s and 9s are the wild cards. Because there are up to eight wild cards live in the deck, hands run very large and five of a kind is common.

What does a face-up 4 do?

A 4 dealt face up is a "walk": the player who receives it is immediately dealt an extra card. Some tables allow the extra card for each 4 that lands face up, so a lucky player can end up with more cards to choose from than everyone else.

What is the face-up 3 rule?

A common extra rule: if you are dealt a 3 face up, you must either match the current pot to stay in the hand or fold immediately. Since 3s are wild, this forces an awkward choice — pay a premium to keep a valuable wild card, or give it up. Not every table uses this rule.

Is Baseball otherwise like Seven-Card Stud?

Yes. The deal and betting structure are those of Seven-Card Stud — two down, four up, one down, with betting between streets. Baseball just adds the wild cards and the 4-card and 3-card themed rules on top.
